IT was an insult to draw a link between teenage pregnancy and the monthly grant young mothers received, Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini said yesterday.
Dlamini was in Nelson Mandela Bay as part of her department’s ongoing service delivery improvement initiative, Project Mikondzo.
“There is no such link between the grant and teenage pregnancy. It is an insult to the women. Some get as little as R300. We also found that some of these mothers only register for the grant after the child gets to the age of three,” Dlamini said. She said other social ills contributed to teen pregnancy, including alcohol abuse and school drop-outs.
