ILLEGALLY caught fish and mussels worth about R17000 were confiscated during a joint operation yesterday. The fish – which are not allowed to be sold commercially – were discovered at a warehouse operating as a clothing shop in Cawood Street, North End, at about 2am yesterday.
A 32-year-old Chinese man was arrested on charges including operating an illegal fish processing plant, the illegal sale of fish and trying to bribe officials. He cannot be named until he appears in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court today.
Police spokeswoman Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said the arrest was part of an ongoing operation by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and Port of Entry police.
