UK doctor’s trip to make a difference

A BRITISH flying doctor, determined to make a difference in the devastating rate of pregnant women dying in Africa, touched down in Port Elizabeth last week on the last leg of a three-month adventure.

The head of the obstetrics and gynaecology department of Dora Nginza Hospital, Dr Mafundo Mabenge, said they were delighted to have Dr Sophia Webster at the hospital to help train and inform midwives, doctors and nurses about pregnancy-related complications.

Webster, an obstetrician who is also a qualified pilot, took off from Cranfield Airport in the UK in a Cessna light aircraft on August 1 and South Africa was last on her list of 26 African countries to visit.
