Uitenhage under siege as housing protest turns violent

THERE was mayhem in Uitenhage yesterday, with the western half of the town coming to a complete shutdown as thousands of angry residents demanding houses blocked roads, set community halls alight and torched councillors’ offices and vehicles.

The town resembled a war zone as the protesters burnt tyres and pelted cars with stones, barring all entry into the Rosedale, Gerald Smit and Langa townships.

They clashed with the police who fired rubber bullets and stun grenades in a bid to disperse the crowds.
