NMMU era ends with retirements

TWENTY-NINE Nelson Mandela Metro- politan University staff – among them three of the institution’s longest-serving academics – are set to retire at the end of this year. Professors Nico Groenewald, Japie Engelbrecht and Henk Pauw have notched up a mammoth 128 years’ service between them.

Engelbrecht, a former head of the physics department who has worked at NMMU for 43 years, and Groenewald, a lecturer in mathematics for 44 years, go way back to even being student roommates at the former University of Port Elizabeth (UPE).

Pauw, an anthropologist, is also a former head of department, school director and deputy dean, and has acted as executive dean
