AN English pilot is recreating a historic flight in a small open aircraft that was first undertaken in 1928 by Mary Heath, the first woman to hold a commercial flying licence in Britain

Gutsy pilot Tracey Curtis-Taylor, 51, touched down in Port Elizabeth on Saturday in a 1942 open cockpit Boeing Stearman, Spirit of Artemis. It is one of 32 stops on her 13679km journey over the next six weeks.

“I have just experienced an amazing sight of whales frolicking in the ocean beneath me,” she said at the Port Elizabeth Airport after landing.

“I was in Port Elizabeth before [25 years ago]. I was dropped off here and wanted to catch a train to Durban,” Curtis-Taylor said.
