Children hand in tyres and receive sweets in exchange

POLICE in Gelvandale, Port Elizabeth, have embarked on a sweets-for-tyres campaign in an effort to ensure a safer Guy Fawkes next week.

Youths in the city’s northern areas are known to burn tyres on Guy Fawkes Day, celebrated annually on November 5, often causing damage to road surfaces and sometimes burning themselves.

Now, officers at the Gelvandale police station are hoping their initiative to collect and confiscate tyres will help curb this.
