Hostage drama dad, son in court

THE state is opposing bail for a father and son who allegedly took two people hostage in a suspected suicide mission on Monday night. A sickly Ernst Henderik Bernadus Lottering, 49, held on to his son, Ernst Bernardus Lottering, 19, as they made a brief appearance in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

The dramatic ordeal lasted for seven hours on Monday night when the Lotterings allegedly took pharmacist Myra Booth and employee Dorah Manisa hostage at Aloe Pharmacy in the Seaview shopping complex.

The men, believed to be bush dwellers from Roodepoort, allegedly threatened Booth with a gun and an explosive device, which later turned out to be toy replicas.
