CERVICAL cancer patients in the Eastern Cape will no longer have to leave the province for live-saving surgery, thanks to a Nelson Mandela Bay state doctor who has specialised in gynaecological oncology.
Dr Mfundo Mabenge, Dora Nginza Hospital’s chief of obstetrics and gynaecology, was presented with the opportunity in July last year to specialise as a gynaecological oncologist as there were none in the province’s public hospitals.
This week, he – with the help of two Pretoria surgeons – performed surgery on nine women, most of them diagnosed with advanced cervical cancer.
“The MEC for Health, Sicelo Gqobana, several of the department’s senior managers and the chief executive officer of the hospital complex, Dr Kobus Kotze, all gave me the go-ahead to specialise further,” Mabenge said.
