Chess on rise in Northern Areas

AFTER being virtually absent from Port Elizabeth’s Northern Areas schools, the game of chess is now the favoured activity of some of the pupils from 12 schools which participated in a newly established chess league.

And the inaugural Northern Areas Primary School Chess Awards were celebrated earlier this week at the West End Community Centre.

Previously, the area only had three schools involved in chess but, according to Claude van Heerden, the convener of the Northern Areas Chess League and a teacher at Parkside Primary School, the game is now very popular.
