20 Malabar families homeless after fire destroys shacks

MORE than 20 families from Port Elizabeth’s Malabar Extension 6 lost everything but the clothes on their backs when a massive fire – fanned by strong wind – raged through large parts of the informal settlement at the weekend.

Gale-force winds gusting at up to 92km/h wreaked havoc in other parts of Nelson Mandela Bay, uprooting a tree in Walmer township and blowing down power lines, leaving large parts of the city in darkness on Saturday night.

Scaffolding at the upmarket The Bay apartment complex in Summerstrand also collapsed due to the strong wind, while the Third Avenue dip in Newton Park had to be temporarily closed after heavy rain flooded the road.
