Councillor told to step down

MORE than 50 Joe Slovo residents protested outside the New Brighton police station in Port Elizabeth yesterday, demanding the release of ANC branch leaders who had been arrested for damaging property.

The Ward 41 leaders who were arrested on Monday appeared briefly in the New Brighton court yesterday. Simphiwe Tyukana, 44, Ncedile Soxujwa, 43, Anele Cumbe, 34, and Vizinto Mbewu, 50, were arrested after community members in Joe Slovo demanded that councillor Mbongeni Bhungane's office be closed down on September 17.

The community members accused Bhungane of promoting divisions within the ANC, which led to a clash between Bhungane's supporters and those against him.
