'Blonde Xhosa' an angel to creches

GLENDA Brunette, 52, has already left a lasting legacy in Nelson Mandela Bay's Walmer township but she is determined to spread the wings of her project even further.

The Herald GM Citizen of the Year finalist, fondly called Mamtshawe (her Xhosa clan name), looks after creches in the township under the auspice of the Walmer Angels Project.

She has also established two soup kitchens that feed about 140 families three times a week.

Now, she is introducing a literacy programme after the Walmer Angels Project formed a partnership with Cape Town-based Shine Centre.

The project is aimed at strengthening early childhood literacy development and encourages a love for reading.
