Man held for wife's murder

A PORT Elizabeth businessman was arrested for the murder of his wife yesterday after he allegedly slashed her throat and then staged a break-in at their Fernglen home to cover his tracks.

The 44-year-old American national and co-owner of a popular Greenacres restaurant is expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court tomorrow on a charge of murder.

The state is expected to oppose bail.

The man, who cannot be named until he appears in court, was arrested at about 7am yesterday, just hours after he rushed his 37-year-old wife to Greenacres Hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.

The woman may also not be named at this stage as it would identify him.

Police spokesman Captain Stanley Jarvis said the husband had flagged down a police patrol vehicle on his way to the hospital and told them he and his wife had been attacked at their upmarket townhouse complex.
