French rugby honour for Danie Gerber

LEGENDARY former Eastern Province and Springbok rugby centre Danie Gerber has been inducted into an international Hall of Fame dream team named by a top French rugby newspaper.

A surprised Gerber, who lives in Bluewater Bay, received a letter from Paris this week informing him of the honour.

Gerber, who played 24 tests for the Springboks, will be flown to Paris in November to attend a gala 60th edition of the French Rugby Awards dinner, named the "Rugby Oscars", which will be held on the Champs Elysees.

"It is really wonderful to get this sort of recognition and it means a lot to me," Gerber said. "Because of isolation, I did not play a lot of test matches, so it makes it special to get this sort of award."

Gerber stopped playing international rugby in 1992.
