Tackling the Trek route

THE bellows of oxen hauling creaking wagons and the crack of whips will be replaced by the roar of modern-day horse power, when 34 intrepid adventurers commemorate the 175th anniversary of the Great Trek with an epic 4X4 journey which starts in the Eastern Cape this week.

The daunting project, initiated under the guidance of the Federation of Afrikaner Cultural Organisations (FAK), will see 34 travellers in eight vehicles following the ox-wagon route taken by Great Trek leader Piet Retief from the Eastern Cape to Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal.

After departing from the Klipbokkop 4X4 Academy near Worcester in the Western Cape today, the commemorative journey will start in earnest from Graaff-Reinet where the Western Cape- based group will be spending the night.
