Kids keen to heed Biko's call

NELSON Mandela Bay pupils are eager to heed the call of Black Consciousness Movement leader Steve Biko's close associate, Moki Cekisani, to adopt the philosophy and apply it today.

Cekisani, who was addressing pupils from Walmer and Theodor Herzl high schools yesterday in commemoration of Biko's death, said although South Africans were politically free, there was still a way to go to achieving mental freedom.

"Black Consciousness is needed today because those people that wanted to be freed by Biko and [former president Nelson] Mandela are still oppressed. We need to break this dependant thinking because some people are not free mentally, so there will never be any effective changes," he said.
