Greening dump site a walk in the park

CHILDREN'S laughter will soon ring out in what used to be New Brighton's filthiest illegal dump sites – thanks to a transformation from stinking eyesore to manicured play park.

The revamp is part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality's R2.5-million project to convert illegal nine dumping sites in various wards into safe areas for children to enjoy.

Hlawula Street residents could not hold back their excitement when the new park, still in its first phase, was officially opened by portfolio health and environment standing committee member Thembisile Gana and Ward 17 councillor Ncediso Captain.

New Brighton community members said the space had become a dump because it was empty, and constantly smelt of dead animals.
