Fury over tardiness in fixing pipes

NELSON Mandela Bay residents have heavily criticised the municipality for failing to fix leaking water pipes despite warnings that the city is heading for a serious water shortage.

While Carpenter Street residents in Westering had to survive without water for three days last week, other areas like the M10 and M14 road to Uitenhage have had a leaking water pipe for at least a month.

At Clarendon Street in Mount Pleasant, water has been streaming down the street for seven weeks.

All the leaking pipes were reported to the municipality's 0800-205-050 24-hour service line.

Last month the municipality warned residents and businesses to cut down on water usage to avert a crisis. Failing this, it threatened to increase tariffs.
