THE appointment of the Eastern Cape’s first ever paediatric oncologist has been hailed by the doctors and parents of young cancer patients.
Dr Lungile Pepeta, who heads the Port Elizabeth Hospital Complex’s paediatrics department, said yesterday Dr Janie Vermeulen would join the paediatrics team at Dora Nginza Hospital at the beginning of next year.
“Up to now, we had to send most of our cancer patients to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town,” he said.
“Now we can keep them and their families together.”
Pepeta was speaking at the official opening of the new Childhood Cancer Foundation (CHOC) Lodge at Dora Nginza.
