Residents left in dark for months

RESIDENTS of the Vastrap informal settlement, Greenfields and Sewende Laan outside Booysen Park in the northern areas have been battling without electricity for the past three months and accuse the municipality of doing nothing to resolve the matter.

But the municipality said yesterday work to repair the damaged transformer would start next week.

The ward councillor for the area, Mbongeni Bungane, said earlier this week residents took to the streets to protest about nothing being done to reconnect the electricity.

“The problem is that the area of Vastrap, which is an informal settlement of about 5000 shacks, has been making use of illegal connections to gain access to electricity. These illegal connections put a lot of pressure on the municipal infrastructure, resulting in the transformer blowing. Many appliances were destroyed and damaged as a result.”
