Brave mom refuses to give up on baby

A DESPERATE Jeffreys Bay mother whose daughter was born with a rare genetic condition is refusing to give up on her three-week-old baby, despite doctors saying there is nothing else they can do for her.

Bernadette and Andre Swartz exhausted their savings to pay for her maternal care and the birth of their third child, Jordan, at Greenacres Hospital.

“I had all the scans and a 4D scan and nobody picked up that there was something wrong with the child. I didn’t have an amniocentesis because I am only 34,” Bernadette said.

“When my baby was born she had extra fingers and toes. We first thought, it was only extra fingers and toes, but the doctors ordered that she be taken to the neo-natal intensive care unit immediately.”

She said doctors then discovered that Jordan’s heart was on the right side of her body and not the left. “We don’t have a medical aid but we saved to pay for the birth. Jordan was in the neo-natal ICU for six or seven hours and then we had no more money,” she said.
