A PORT Elizabeth teacher’s soft spot for one of his pupils developed into a crush, which eventually led to her alleged rape, a court has heard.
Family man Johnny Baartman, 48, a former economics teacher at Sanctor High School, allegedly also sexually assaulted the then 14-year-old girl in the school library.
Her best friend, who testified yesterday, said she walked in on the alleged incident.
The tearful Sanctor High pupil, who cannot be named because she is a minor, told the Port Elizabeth Regional Court how her best friend had confided the details of the alleged rape to her.
“When sir looked at her in class, she would feel uncomfortable. His attention was always on her.”
Baartman, of Fernwood Park, has pleaded not guilty to both charges.
