HIGHLY decorated policemen, family and friends were brought to tears as they remembered SergeantWillem Pretorius at his memorial service at Victory Ministries International Church in Gelvan Park yesterday.

Pretorius, 36, a policeman at the Gelvandale police station, was found shot at 11.30pm on Thursday in his black Chevrolet Spark, which was parked in a clearing a few hundred metres off the R334 between Motherwell and Uitenhage. Just a few metres away Uitenhage handyman Ary van Onselen, believed to be in his 30s, was found stabbed more than 20 times. Van Onselen survived the attack and is in a critical condition in Cuyler Clinic Private Hospital in Uitenhage.

The visibly distraught Pretorius family is still struggling to come to terms with the peculiar death, Pretorius’ brother Brendan said. “We are all struggling, especially my sister, Charlotte. It all happened so suddenly; one day he was here the next he was gone. And there are a lot of unanswered questions which makes it even harder to let go,” he said.
