Public urged to come to the aid of penguins affected by oil spill

THE SA Marine Rehabilitation and Education Centre (Samrec) is appealing to the public to immediately report any injured or oiled penguins to them after two oiled penguins were found along the coast of Port Elizabeth yesterday.

The organisation, based at Cape Recife, said it believed there may be more birds in danger of coming into contact with oil that has leaked from a cargo ship that ran aground off Buffels Bay near Knysna last Thursday. Attempts to refloat the 168m Kiani Satu are still under way in the Southern Cape.

Samrec trustee and co-founder Libby Sharwood said they received the first call regarding an oiled penguin from the police who were patrolling Pollok Beach early yesterday morning.
