A MYSTERY illness prevented the wife of a high-ranking politician from appearing in the Commercial Crimes Court yesterday on charges of fraud.

Nontuthuzelo Portia “Pankie” Sizani – wife of ANC parliamentary chief whip Stone Sizani, also a former education MEC – is charged with 31 counts of fraud and money laundering for allegedly having caused the Department of Education a total loss of R1235000 and pocketing R292900.

Sizani, 45, allegedly created ghost teachers and pocketed their salaries between January 2009 and November 2010.

She was due to appear before Magistrate Louis Claassen yesterday but her legal representative, Advocate Johan Wessels, asked for a postponement because she was sick.
