AN Mthatha businessman told yesterday how – tired and not wanting to cause an accident – he pulled over to rest on the side of the road near Greenbushes, Port Elizabeth, only to be hit by a vehicle allegedly driven at high speed by Eastern Cape Health MEC Sicelo Gqobana early on Sunday morning.
The businessman, Billy Dilata, questioned Gqobana’s sobriety at the time of the accident and alleged that he had been speeding.
However, police said neither of the drivers had, at the time, appeared to have consumed alcohol.
Gqobana, who was driving a rented Mercedes-Benz ML, did not respond to questions yesterday.
The accident happened at about 4am on the N2 between Jeffreys Bay and Port Elizabeth.
