THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has moved a step closer to easing the huge housing backlog in Walmer township following a signed offer to buy a piece of land next to the Walmer Country Club.
Human settlements portfolio chairman Buyisile Mkavu said this week they had signed off on an offer to buy the 43.7ha Walmer Area Q, also known as erf 11305, next to the club.
In May, mayor Ben Fihla and Mkavu said they were planning to make a R20-million deposit for the land owned by Chris Lovemore, who is represented by Warren Jack Property Group.
But this week, Mkavu would not say how much they were willing to pay for the land.
“The offer to purchase erf 11305 was signed last week but I will not divulge the figure.
