ANC Eastern Cape bosses met behind closed doors in East London last night to discuss damage control after Nelson Mandela Bay city manager Lindiwe Msengana-Ndlela threw in the towel on Wednesday.
Two senior municipal managers – Dr Mamisa Chabula-Nxiweni and Selwyn Thys – turned up at the Port Elizabeth City Hall yesterday, ready to take over running the administration in the interim.
While Thys was put in charge by Local Government MEC Mlibo Qoboshiyane’s department on Wednesday, deputy mayor Chippa Ngcolomba delegated powers to Chabula-Nxiweni.
Thys was seen leaving the City Hall later in the morning as mayoral spokesman Roland Williams sent out a statement – with a CV attached – saying Chabula-Nxiweni had been appointed to act until further notice.
Her appointment raised questions about whether or not she had the minimum competencies required by the national Treasury for an accounting officer.
