THE close-knit community of Windvogel in Port Elizabeth are reeling after the horrific rape of a five- year-old girl on Monday sent shockwaves through the suburb.

They were so horrified they tried to assault the suspect – a 35-year-old man who was out on bail for a previous case of rape – outside his home. Police arrested the suspect and took him away before angry community members could mete out mob justice.

The girl, who cannot be identified, had to undergo surgery yesterday due to the violent nature of the rape.

Her aunt, who also cannot be identified in order to protect the victim, said the family was still struggling to understand what had happened to her.
