AN ALERT Department of Home Affairs official was behind the arrest of two women caught trying to fraudulently obtain identity documents (ID) yesterday.

The two New Brighton women – aged 23 and 37 – were arrested on fraud charges and are expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.

Home Affairs official Ntombizine Lungisa said she noticed something was amiss when the 23-year-old woman approached her shortly after 11am to apply for a temporary ID.

“After she submitted the application form, I printed a temporary ID. However, after she returned from the fingerprints section, I realised she had used a photograph of her friend who was waiting in the security area. The two women look alike,” she said.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Alwin Labans confirmed the arrests and said the women would appear in court tomorrow.
