Bay man cheats death

A PORT Elizabeth man escaped being shot in the face yesterday when the gun aimed at him failed to go off. The man, 59 – a Department of Sports and Recreation employee who asked not to be named as he feared for his safety – was held up by three men at the 6th Avenue Shopping Centre in Walmer yesterday afternoon.

The Little Chelsea man said he was walking towards Nedbank at the Heugh Road entrance, briefcase in hand, when he was robbed.

“As I approached the entrance one man pulled out a gun and put it in my face. Another came from behind and grabbed my briefcase. I didn’t let go and a third man punched me from the side,” he said.

As the scuffle continued, a silver Volkswagen Polo came speeding towards the entrance. “When the car pulled up the one man put the gun in my face and pulled the trigger. It didn’t go off and he cocked the gun again,” the shocked man said.
