Bay squatter extends ‘turf’

Tremaine van Aardt

A SQUATTER living in a flower bed in the middle of a busy Port Elizabeth road has further antagonised businesses in the area by extending his home.

Mfundo Notwala, 51, has lived at the same spot near KFC in Commercial Road, Sidwell, for three years and refuses to move.

His 2mx2m home, made of cardboard and old blankets, has been broken down twice before and now – more determined than ever to stay – Notwala has “renovated” it.

“My new home is much bigger. I used these corrugated tin shacks, which were already here, as boundary walls and filled the gaps between them with wood pallets. It is bigger and more steady. I have turned one of these tin shacks into my bedroom,” he said.

“I will not move unless it is into my RDP house promised to me by the government many years ago.”
