JUST three days before his baby twins were born Zwelinzima Vavi admitted to having sex with a pretty 26-year-old Cosatu secretary.
He claims it was consensual, she claims it was rape but whatever the world chooses to believe, the image Vavi tries to portray as a wholesome family man will never be the same again.
The Vavi’s are no strangers to controversy but they have always shown a united front, unreservedly supporting each other.
But yesterday evening Noluthando did not answer her phone despite numerous calls from Weekend Post nor did she respond to an SMS asking if she would be standing by her man.
The power couple have managed to withstand some serious mudslinging in the past with rumours that Noluthando, a fellow trade unionist and former South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) leader, left her former husband, Bheki Ngema, to be with Vavi with whom she was having an extra-marital affair.
Despite a number of scandals the couple tied the knot on August 18 2007 just a week after his divorce from his wife of 17 years, Nikiwe, was finalised.
Vavi was earlier that year embroiled in a corruption scandal when he was accused of fraudulently using a Cosatu credit card to hire expensive cars. He was alleged to have also used the credit card to take Noluthando on a number of trips abroad.
In 2010 Noluthando quit her lucrative job amid a scandal at financial services company SA Quantum. At the time she said despite playing no role in the scandal, which involved a SA Quantum employee offering a reporter R120 000 to quash a story claiming that Noluthando was paid R60 000 a month to allegedly market the company to Cosatu affiliates, she felt compelled to resign.
Throughout the SA Quantum scandal Vavi stood by his wife but with allegations of rape and sex in the office doing the rounds it remains to be seen if Noluthando does the same – particularly as he has admitted to having sex just three days before the birth of the couple’s twins, a boy and a girl.
