A GELVANDALE High School pupil has done her school proud by winning first prize in a provincial waste recycling competition spearheaded by the Department of Environmental Affairs.
By winning the competition Grade 11 pupil Dorianne Syce, 19, has won R5500 for herself and R20000 for the school, which is located in one of Port Elizabeth’s most destitute areas.
This was the first year the department has run its waste management school competition in the province.
“We were asked to make something using old or recycled products so I collected old newspapers, plastic and old bottle tops and made a dress. This is a project I always wanted to do because I believe we need to look after the environment,” Dorianne said.
She said she worked for several hours on her project, assisted by friends and fellow pupils Zakkiyah Jacobs, 17, and Sherna Hendricks, 19.
