Homes without roofs as upgrade stalls

PORT Elizabeth pensioner Wilson Dumezweni spent part of his pension payout on buying his wife, Buyiswa, 57, the kitchen of her dreams.

But all that has gone down the drain as their Soweto-on-Sea house, meant to have been upgraded, stands incomplete.

The Ward 27 house – and many others in the area – were part of a housing rectification project which started in June last year.

A year later, walls of the houses have developed cracks in them while others are still without roofs, window and door frames.

Dumezweni said he had lived without a roof for a few months. This resulted in some of his furniture being damaged by rain. The bedroom doors were removed and residents were told they would be replaced with new ones, but they were still waiting.
