NELSON Mandela Bay’s acting economic development boss, Anele Qaba, is hoping to get the green light from councillors this week to kick-start his ambitious tourism projects.
These include a 100m Statue of Liberation – taller than New York’s iconic Statue of Liberty – at the Motherwell Peace Park.
To get the ball rolling, Qaba’s department needs R500000 to draw up a concept and design plan, as well as the estimated costs.
The municipality will thereafter approach the national Department of Arts and Culture for funding.
Although it was initially touted to be a giant replica of former president Nelson Mandela, the plan has since changed and Qaba said various designs would be considered.
