THE Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) made history yesterday with the launch of the first electric racing car produced by an African university.

Manufactured by a team of mechanical and electrical engineering students, the DibaE was designed to compete at the Formula Student Competition (FSC) in Hockenheim, Germany, later this month.

The car includes brand new technologies such as a 100KW, 450Nm Brushless-DC electric motor powered by Lithium Polymer batteries, targeting a 0-100km/h acceleration of less than 4.7seconds, a unique aerodynamic package incorporating front and rear wings, and a Formula One style under-body diffuser to increase cornering down-force.
