IN a traumatic and humiliating move, six Nelson Mandela Bay matric pupils have been told they have to go back to Grade 11 after it was found they had failed their December exams last year and were “promoted by mistake”.
As the six pupils, all of Sophakama Senior Secondary School in New Brighton, geared up to begin the second half of their final school year today, they were told the Education Department in Bhisho did not recognise them as matric pupils.
The school promoted the pupils, who had apparently missed the grade by a few marks, without advising the Education Department.
They are Lwando Mayoli, 19, and Vuyokazi Tshawuza, 18, both of New Brighton, Fikiswa Fiphaza, 17, of Kwazakhele, Mthetheleli Makeleni, Abongile Thonjeni and Khanya Mafu, whose ages and addresses are not known.
The pupils, who were “totally crushed” by the devastating news, will today have to deal with the “extreme humiliation” of going back a year after six months of “blood, sweat and tears” in an effort to pass matric.
