TWO terrified passengers – and co-passengers – who were travelling on a bus from Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg are lucky to be alive after it burnt out en route to their destination. The SA Roadlink bus caught fire and burnt out on Wednesday night about 30km outside Cradock.
Brian Bothma and his girlfriend, Jade- Beth Vergoes Houwens, were on theiir way to attend his aunt Elna Randall’s funeral in Johannesburg today.
“It happened so fast. The windows burst. All that was left was the bus frame. It looked like one of those wire cars,” Bothma, a data specialist at Vodacom, said.
Despite the incident, Bothma said SA Roadlink only reimbursed them half of their combined return tickets that cost R1796 in total.
He said passengers initially thought it was a burst tyre when the driver pulled off the road.
“We sat on the bus for about 10 minutes before the driver came back and told everyone to get off because of a fire,” he said.
The 27-year-old Bothma said the breakdown happened just after 9pm.
After the passengers disembarked and grabbed their luggage, the bus burnt out.
Some passengers lost their luggage during the scramble to escape.
