Monster shark monitored along coast

A GREAT white shark that “pinged” off Jeffreys Bay earlier this week was making its way west along the coast and was believed to be between Plettenberg Bay and Knysna by yesterday afternoon.

The 5.1m female, Success, was tagged in Struisbaai in the Western Cape as part of an Ocearch project in May last year researching the biology, health, life history and migration of sharks.

The tracking data showed that Success, a mature shark weighing about 1.6 tons, had been to Madagascar and was tracked near Durban on June 15.

On Tuesday, the Ocearch website shark tracking data indicated she was in Jeffreys Bay waters at about 7pm and by 11.54am yesterday, she was headed towards Knysna.

Koffie Jacobs, secretary of the JBU Surf Club, said he was relieved the shark had moved along. – Shaanaaz de Jager
