THE world’s most advanced solar-powered hybrid car carrier docked at the Port Elizabeth harbour yesterday, the second stop on its first ever voyage to South Africa.

The Emerald Ace, also the world’s first hybrid car carrier, arrived in the Bay at about 7am to offload more than 200 Volkswagen Polos for South Africa and other vehicles destined for Nigeria. It is one of 800 vessels including cruise ships and cargo carriers owned by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd (MOL).

The environmentally friendly vessel, designed to reduce gas emissions, has 11 decks and can hold up to 5700 vehicles.

Port authorities said yesterday the docking was a “milestone in the quest to make Port Elizabeth the automotive hub [of SA]”.
