DISGRACED former tennis ace Bob Hewitt has been ordered to appear in court to face criminal charges of sexual assault almost 30 years after the alleged incidents.

Defence Advocate Terry Price said Hewitt would plead not guilty to the charges.

Hewitt, 73, who now lives in Addo with his wife, former international model Delaille, aged in her 60s, is accused of sexually molesting several underage girls while coaching them between the late 1970s and the early 1990s.

Considered one of the greatest doubles players of all time, Hewitt was struck from the International Tennis Hall of Fame (ITHF) in November after all 25 board members voted unanimously that he had brought the sport into disrepute.

Until last year, Hewitt had carried the honour of being the first South African to be inducted into the US-based ITHF.
