ABOUT 1000 mourners attended a mass funeral in Port Elizabeth at the weekend for seven members of the same family – including two young children – who were killed in an accident along the R75 outside Uitenhage.
Among those who attended the emotional funeral at the Ebenezer Centre in Algoa Park, was Roads and Transport MEC Tandi Marawu.
Sisters Rocina Beukes, 38, Sonia Martin, 32, and Mary-Ann Jonkers, 35, their father Jessie Martin, 65, Jonkers’s husband Victor, 40, Sonia’s son Jaydon Martin, 4, and cousin Showin Martin, 4, all died when their vehicle collided with a truck on their way back to Port Elizabeth from Jansenville on June 5.
Janine Ruiters, 4, was the only survivor and is at the Dora Nginza Hospital.
The seven were buried in four adjacent graves at the Malabar Cemetery on Saturday afternoon.
Showin’s tiny white coffin was placed on top his grandfather Jessie’s coffin. Husband and wife Victor and Mary-Ann, and mother and son Sonia and Jaydon also shared graves. Rocina Beukes was buried alone.
“The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality donated the graves because five of the family members did not have a funeral policy,” family spokesman and friend Manuel Uithaler said.
