A PORT Elizabeth school on the verge of closing has been thrown a lifeline in the form of laptops and other materials to boost teaching.

The Gqebera Secondary School in Zinyoka township received 20 laptops for pupils, with internet connection, a laptop for teachers, an interactive whiteboard, projector and monthly internet bundles.

A community developer at the school, Mbulelo Mdyogolo, said the donation came at the right time.

“We are fighting for the school not to be closed by the department of education. It wants to close the school because of the low number of pupils. We have 240 pupils instead of the 800 required for a high school. Children in this area prefer to go to other schools that cater for their nutrition,” he said.

The equipment was donated as part of the Vodacom Millionaires competition after a former teacher at the school, Zoleka Zanuse, entered the SMS competition.
