THREE years after Port Elizabeth’s North End Lake underwent a major clean- up in time for the 2010 World Cup, it has been neglected to such an extent that water samples show it is not fit for recreational use.
Although there have been plans since 2010 to develop the lake into a leisure hub, the project is in limbo due to financial constraints.
At a public health committee meeting yesterday, DA councillor Gustav Rautenbach raised concerns about the polluted lake being used for water skiing and fishing.
“This lake is used by many people for catching fish for human consumption, and there is a ski-boat club there.
“We are sitting with a very dangerous situation if we say the lake is unfit for human use,” Rautenbach said.
“What are we doing to safeguard our people using this lake?
