BARELY two years after bursting onto the Premier Soccer League (PSL) scene, Port Elizabeth-born Ronwen Williams has emerged as one of the league’s best goalkeepers.
Williams, 21, recently scooped the Absa Premiership Young Player of the Season title for the second time at this year’s PSL Awards.
“Winning the award for the second consecutive time was an amazing feeling. My PSL career has been very exciting. The calibre of players and the intensity of the games are awesome,” Williams said.
Williams was scouted by the SuperSport United Youth academy while playing at the loveLife Games in Durban when he was just 13, but even now he is in no hurry to leave.
“At SuperSport there is less pressure than some clubs because we are seen as the underdogs.
“[This] allows us to focus on our football,” Williams said. “It has also been an honour for me to play with the veterans at this club, people who have played right at the top. The club really believes in the youth. They try to improve us as individuals, not just players.”
