A YOUNG mother was beaten, robbed and raped in front of her infant yesterday by a man police suspect broke into her Glen Hurd, Port Elizabeth, home last month and stole only a bunch of keys.
Shocked family and friends and curious neighbours stood outside as police combed the house, garden and surrounding areas for two hours.
The 21-year-old woman, who cannot be named as she is the victim of a sexual crime, was taken to Greenacres Hospital before police arrived, while her one-month-old baby was looked after by relatives.
“There is still some confusion as to exactly what transpired as she is very traumatised. It appears she was lying on her bed when the man confronted her inside the house,” Police spokeswoman Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said.
An officer at the scene said the woman had bruises on her face, neck and arms.
“The woman is undergoing medical tests and only once she is deemed to be in a right frame of mind will detectives be able to interview her,” Janse van Rensburg said.
The matter has been handed over to the specialist Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit to investigate further.
