Bell tolls for iconic hotel

NELSON Mandela Bay’s Jewel of the Ocean – as the Seaview Hotel was once known – will soon be reduced to a pile of rubble and dust.

The building was condemned yesterday at a meeting attended by representatives of the Nelson Mandela Bay Building Inspectorate Division and Architectural Division, the Mandela Bay Heritage Trust, Eastern Cape Provincial Heritage Association officials and Ward 40 councillor Vicky Knoetze.

Knoetze said: “It is with regret that we have to condemn a heritage landmark. The Seaview Hotel has been allowed to deteriorate into a total state of disrepair.”

But Seaview resident Lomo du Plessis said demolishing the structure was a step in the right direction.

“The site has become a health hazard. And there is not much sympathy for the heritage sections of the building either,” Du Plessis said.

Consulting engineers declared the building unsafe earlier this month.
