A NEW mother, who was left in a coma after being viciously attacked by axe-wielding intruders in her Willowvale home, died in an East London hospital early yesterday afternoon. Carmen Manthe, 37, who had an 11-week-old baby girl, was brutally assaulted by three men and sustained massive head injuries while she was taking a shower last Tuesday afternoon.
She fell into a coma later that evening and her life support was switched off yesterday after she was declared brain dead. A distraught family member said her husband, Willowvale trading store owner Andrew Manthe, was “devastated” at the loss of the woman he had married less than a year ago.
Carmen was at home on maternity leave with her mother, Denise Simpson, and domestic worker, Thembeka Madakani, when the men burst into her bathroom and assaulted her with a tomahawk, according to the police.
